Psychology Talk.... Perception - it ain't what you see, it's the way that you see it
Over the years, approximate answers to these questions have come from researchers who hail from a range of different scientific and medical disciplines. Essentially, seeing arises out of the interplay between bottom-up or data-driven signal inputs and top-down cognitive driven processing. Cognition is a broad umbrella term involving higher order processing which brings meaning to perception. It incorporates attention, memory, planning, expectation, learning, decision making and lots more. In effect, top-down processing provides context and understanding to the incoming visual signals and the retinal image. This lecture will demonstrate and explain a number of cognitive behaviours such as: inference and best guess, decision making, and cognitive failure. It is hoped that after listening to this presentation, you will feel more inclined to explore the issues related to each of the three (admittedly broad) questions that we originally set out to examine. Or, better still, you may find yourself asking more specific questions. Key words: Attention, Awareness, Best guess, Cognition, Cognitive disorders, Context, Decision making, Expectation, Eye movements, Inference, Perception, Veridical.
